The Lowcountry Area Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program offers FREE income tax preparation.  In collaboration with the IRS and many local partners, the Lowcountry Area VITA Coalition assists working individuals and families who generally make $54,000 or less, the elderly, and limited English speaking taxpayers file their federal and state tax returns.  
Last year 46 IRS-certified volunteers spent 3,008 hours preparing 2,197 tax returns.  In total, $3,035,871 were returned to local taxpayers' pockets, not to mention the money saved in tax preparation services!

    • Appointment-only tax preparation will occur at the Bluffton Library (120 Palmetto Way, Bluffton, SC 29910) on select Saturdays.
  • Drop-off/virtual tax preparation
    • No time to wait in line?
    • Bring copies of your tax documents, and we will prepare your return within 7 days.
    • Visit the Lobeco Library (1862 Trask Pkwy, Seabrook, SC 29940) on Saturdays from 11:30AM-3:30PM to take advantage of this service.

What to Bring to Your Local VITA Site*
  • A copy of last year’s federal and state returns, if available
  • Social Security cards for you, your spouse and dependents (everyone on the return)
  • An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) assignment letter may be substituted for you, your spouse and your dependents if you do not have a Social Security number
  • Proof of foreign status, if applying for an ITIN
  • Proof of identification (photo ID)
  • Birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents on the tax return
  • All 2015 informational statements, including but not limited to:
    • Wage and earning statements (Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, 1099-Misc) from all employers
    • Interest and dividend statements from banks (Form 1099)
    • Mortgage and interest statements - Form(s) 1098
    • Pension and social security statments - Forms(s) 1099R and SSA-1099
    • Tuition payments statements - Form(s) 1098T
    • Property tax receipt(s) for any property taxes paid in 2015
    • Copies of income transcripts from IRS and state, if applicable
  • Information on deductions
  • Total paid for daycare provider and the daycare provider’s tax identifying number such as their Social Security number or business Employer Identification Number
  •  All forms 1095, Health Insurance Statements
    • Health Insurance Exemption Certification, if received
  • Proof of bank account routing and account numbers for direct deposit such as a blank check
  • To file taxes electronically on a married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms
